This guide is much more welcoming than the dense text of Ridgway. The more you birdwatch, the easier it becomes. This guide, despite covering every species, is lightweight, compact, thin and would travel easily in a backpack – or a large pocket.

Many of the photographs are by co-author Lillian Stokes, with other photographs by over 100 nature photographers who are credited in the back of the book. The MacMillan Field Guide to Bird Identification; A. Birding Journal through the seasons is beautifully designed with nice illustrations. NHBS shows a few sample pages on their fine website. Love it This was exactly what I was looking for. Although the area covered is outside the Indian subcontinent many birds are common and this book is an useful reference in the eastern parts of the country.

You would pan the image in any direction to see more detail. It is chock full of great information and pictures of not just illustrations, but actual photographs of tracks. The 165 full-color paintings show over 1,000 birds from 700 species—every species found west of the Great Plains. In addition to the illustrations, the information is very succinct and basic: A short one or two sentence description of its preferred habitat and diagnostic behaviours.

This is a wonderful book for beginning or advanced bird watchers in Michigan. Tachycineta cyaneoviridis relies on pine forests for breeding, but the movements of the species outside the breeding season are poorly known although it appears that significant numbers over-winter in the country. The newest of the field guides by a few years, this is the one that seems to attract the most derogatory comments, mostly about the artwork.
